NATURE ON THE BOARD

Thistlerock Mead Company is a social enterprise, meaning we strive to maximize social and environmental impact just as much as we strive to produce natural delicious products. We incorporated as a Virginia benefit corporation which enshrines our commitment to people, planet, and pollinators in our founding Articles of Incorporation. This was a critical first step in designing a company build-for-purpose.

Leaning into The Way of Nature™, we are now in the early stages of appointing an independent proxy on our Board of Directors to represent the voice of nature in all governance and corporate culture matters, a critically needed governance innovation pioneered by the EarthLaw Group.

Lastly, we have started the rigorous process of becoming a B Corp certified enterprise, joining an international network of companies that are leading economic systems change to support our collective vision of an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. In order to achieve certification, a company must:

  • Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above and passing our risk review (working on it)

  • Make a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders, and achieve benefit corporation status if available in their jurisdiction (done!);

  • Exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website (working on it!).
